Photography

On these pages is a selection of my work. All of the photos on this site were taken by me and are mostly completely untouched, apart from cropping or rendering into black and white.

I love photography. I love the immediacy of it. I love the moments captured in an image: grief, joy, sorrow, surprise. Warmth and welcome, anger and violence. Photos only tell a part of the story, but a good photo will tell that story very well.

I love the responses beautiful photos bring for people. Good photos help people hold on to the things they might otherwise let slip away.

My gear. I use a Nikon D300 and as back up, a D70s. I have a variety of filters and reflectors, but mostly I try to capture images very naturally.

My main lens is a 50mm prime. As they say, if you need any other lens, you are not standing close enough. But in some places, and Afghanistan is one, you should not always get too close. So for field work, I do use the very good 70-300, and also the excellent F3.5 18-200 VX lens. I also work with a fantastic 28mm and a 110mm, which is beautiful, but limited.

The pictures and photos are displayed here in a reduced size; I can provide originals on request (most are ~3-6 MB in size).

Some other photos, on a professional photoblog are available on:

But I don’t update that site as often as I should.
