I was first in Delhi in 1994, studying poverty, theology and development. I spent a long time in slums and poor urban communities, listening to poor and marginal and excluded people tell their stories, voice their complaints, and make their lives. They were warm, forgiving and generous. One night I slept in a slum with some friends and a rat camped on my head.

I went back to Delhi to work and live for a year with my wife in 1996, when we were several weeks married. We have been going there on and off since. I was there last in 2005, trying to make sense of where my life had come in the last ten years.
